Over the years, Crossplay features have been added to various games by many developers. Many popular games like pubg, fortnite, and Rocket League have combined their Xbox and Playstation servers to facilitate faster matchmaking times. Overwatch was released in 2016 and since then, the players have asked for cross-platform support, and they also have reasons. Most popular multiplayer shooter games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Paladins support Crossplay.
Does Overwatch support cross platform games?
This is a question that most Overwatch fans are looking for and wants the answer as ‘yes’. Even though overwatch cleans all levels to become an intersection, it’s not one. You can even find the game on the Nintendo Switch but it has been separated.
According to the statement released by the Blizzard support page, this is what you need to know:
“PC version and console from a separate Blizzard game and do not share progress, or allow it to play on other platforms. PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Playstation Players all play in separate ecosystems.
On PC, your friend list will be inhabited by your Blizzard account friends. In the Xbox, you will be part of the Xbox Live Network, on Nintendo your friends will come from Nintendo Network, and on the PlayStation your friend’s list will come from the Playstation network.
If you want to play on multiple platforms, the game must be purchased on each platform separately. “
Should you expect overwatch into future cross-platforms?
Now, this is the next question that appears in most players’ thoughts: Will they be able to enjoy overwatch as cross platform games? If the source will be trusted, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan games while talking about Overwatch 2 says that the team is very interested in Crossplay and the players will also play in core competitive mode.
So the idea is quite interesting for the overwatch team, but they still look into it. However, there are reasons why they have not applied them. Call duty 2019: Modern warfare and call duty: Warzone is a clear example of how cross platform support will work for overwatch. Both of these games support Crossplay and cross-progress with the help of the Activision ID so that all your activities are linked to your Activision account. This will help when you shift the platform, your progress will be done by just entering your account.
In the case of overwatch, progress is not linked to any external account and somewhat linked to the online service supported by your platform. And if you want to move it to an external account, this can make you lose all the progress you make in the game. And I don’t think there are people who want to lose their progress and start from the beginning.
So there is a minimum possibility that will support CrossPlay, however, you can expect it with Overwatch 2. As blizzard has mentioned that players will be able to play together in competitive mode after the implementation of the external development system tracking system.
What are the other problems for overwatch to support cross platforms?
Get rid of all technical problems; The main setback facing overwatch into cross-platform is a keyboard and mouse. Overwatch supports controllers on the console and on a PC, you can use the keyboard and mouse but still, you cannot use it on PS4 or Xbox One.
Another statement was given by the Director of the game, “Overwatch team object for the use of the mouse and keyboard in the console.”
Now the explanation for this runs as- they don’t put a ban using the keyboard and mouse on the console but if one person will use the keyboard and mouse on the console and everyone uses the controller, this will provide an unfair benefit of people using the keyboard.
There are other games that support Crossplay regardless of the input device that you use but for the overwatch team, it is an important advantage in terms of this game.
Take the example overwatch league where overwatch players will be more skilled with the controller when compared to the player with the keyboard and mouse. Overwatch is always special about playing style and therefore emphasizes more on skills.
In addition, you should not expect a quick solution to this with the launch of Overwatch 2. Even if the Xbox Series X and PS5 support the keyboard and mouse, which does not give you a guarantee that the developer will support it. So for now, you have to be satisfied with whatever you have and allowed to use it.
